Has anyone ever heard???
Of an artists' colony or retreat that will allow a writer with children to bring her children?
I mean, just hypothetically...
Anyone???

Sure, there are lots. We just got back from Can Serrat, an artist & writer residency outside of Barcelona where children & spouses are welcome. Resartis.org is a great resource for a big list.
Yes, the Montana Artists Refuge: http://www.montanaartistsrefuge.org/
will let you bring your spouse and children. I did a residency here as a poet and loved it (ask for the Lower Hewitt house--the best space to live in, I believe). While I was in residency, there was a painter accompained by her husband and her daughter (who attended the local school while her mother was in residence). There was also an artist couple (professors/department chair), one was a visual artist and the other was a composer--they lived in the same house and the visual artist had a separate studio to work in.
