I'm Jewish and I write...
And so last night I "presented" myself to the Jewish Book Network. It was, as my sister would say, "a time".
People were dressed up as dreidels. No shit. People sang songs out loud. We each had 2 minutes to "present" ourselves with the hope that we'd impress folks enough to get invited to speak/read at Jewish Book Festivals around the country... and it would appear that there are a number of people who think that what impresses people is singing and dressing up like a dreidel or a chef.
Maybe they're right, and more power to em. But I did not dress up. Or sing. Or even prepare a presentation. Still I think it went okay. I think H/L is an important thing for the Jewish Community to think about. I'm very excited by the idea of festival readings...
Highlights of the evening were Sandy Tolan, Ayelet Waldman, and Rachel Kadish. All of whom I'd like to know better. Sandy, in particular, is doing work I admire. If you didn't hear him on Freshair, you should go listen to it. His book , The Lemon Tree, feels important to me!
Thank you, Jewish Book Network! Your efforts are greatly appreciated....

I hope that you had fun...I was at JBN last year representing my JCC and LOVED the opportunity to be exposed to so many authors. Yes, it was a little like SpeedDating but one could really get a sense of an author after 2 minutes. For example. two minutes is long enough to tell if an author is really passionate about his/her work. Since I've switched jobs, I sadly did not get to attend this year. You'll love being out on tour ;)
