There's a big difference...
Between dead and dying. And another leap from very sick to dying...
I haven't wanted to post about Kareem, but some of you seem to be following this...
She is very sick, and we are in that place of letting go, while having a little hope. We've brought her home to stay until she appears to be in pain, or she can't breathe or won't eat.
Despite her funny beach-ball appearance, she's alert and happy, tail-waggin and cat-chasin, and happy for all kinds of yummy tidbits. We're keeping up with her vitamins and meds, but the chances get slimmer as she gets fatter. Chris has taken to callin her, "Cow-Dog."
The vet suggested we put her down two days ago, because "at this point it's really just a matter of time." But when I asked if she was in pain, he responded, "No, but she will be at some point."
Um. Yeah. So will everyone. That's life.
And however short it may be, I plan on spoiling her for it... feeding her chicken and bacon and cuddling her nonstop for a few days, so that in her short sad life she gets a little comfort.
Maybe I'm dumb, but this way I'll be better about letting go I think.

oh honey: i'm so sorry for you all. i'm saying little prayers for you and all things dog-ishy. i hope that little beach-ball decreasing miracles are in store for you.
and you've totally been doing the right thing. kareem couldn't have asked for better adopted parents than you two.
Hi Laurel
My heart goes to you...This is a difficult time but you are doing the right thing. What is right for you and Kareem. I know it is difficult but as my vet told me when my 7 yr golden seemed to start suffering from cancer overnight and with no warning and then only had about 7 weeks, you will know by looking in his/her eye when the time has come. I did exactly what you are doing. Spoiled Comet, fed him yummy stuff and took him for one last swim on his last day. It was so hard because, as you said, his tail was still wagging but he was labouring to live and he needed me to let him go. So Laurel, you will know:)

Laurel, That's so painful. Heartwrenching. You're so right to let Kareem live as long as she's able to enjoy. Afterall, it's only a matter of time for us all. Kareem, at least, will have known love in her life. You've been her answer.
Best, Heidi
