How do people...

Get academic "letters of rec" once they're looong gone from Grad School? You can't go harasshing teachers you haven't seen in 10 years, can you? Can you get letters from peers, friends in the field? What if your profs are sick or dead? That must happen sometimes? What if your profs have simply forgotten you, in the muddle of all the students since you?

Help?

laurel, hey howdy. ye can get recs from the profs of long ago! i'd say, write them, remind them who ye are (what course you took with them, your very excellent grade!), include a long resume (cv) from which they can draw and make the request. i'm not so sure about peers--but i have heard of peers in the field writing recs. i don't think you'd want that exclusively, but one would probably be fine! also, one from an employer might be alright. or your former academic advisor. although you do have to have them, my impression is that recs are not hugely important, unless they're bad. anywho, you might consider setting up a file at AWP career services (ye know this site?) or somewhere where you can have a letter sent and reuse it. thata once you have those letters, you don't have to do dance of the re-harass.

hope this helps! chrs, heidi

I wish I knew. As a former student of Susan Atefat Peckham, I'm now in this situation. She left behind a husband and a son, two parents who had already buried one child, legions of adoring readers, students and friends, and an acclaimed book that should only have been the appetizer for a long and influential career. And all I seem to be able to say about this tragedy is "Oh, crap, NOW how am I ever going to get in to a master's program?" Makes me want to kidnap Jack Ridl and put him under lock and key in a secure location. If anything -- God forbid -- happens to him, I'm toast.
