From many hours reading bug books with le bebes, I think, but am not positive, that is an orb weaver spider. It won't eat you. But it will give you a case of the oogies if it weaves a web outside your door or between two trees in your yard and you walk though it. Keep your wits about you. Sorry to post anony-moose, but I couldn't get blogger to sign me up right. Polli.
It's also called a writing spider, amusingly enough. Technical spidery name is Argiope aurantia. Sorry also for the anonymous post - extremely blog-ignorant, though working to remedy! -Jill
i would have to move if i found that in my yard. there was a spider in my tub the other day, and i ran boiling water for about five minutes and even then, could barely bear to get in the shower.

I can't see the web too well... is there a single zigzag stitch pattern in the center?
